Server Rental Checklist for Data Migration Projects
Data migrations often need temporary infrastructure to stage data, run validation, reduce downtime or bridge the gap between old and new platforms. Planning the temporary environment early can reduce migration risk.
Capacity and compatibility
- Required CPU and memory for migration tools
- Source and target storage capacity
- Operating system, hypervisor and driver compatibility
- RAID and storage controller requirements
- Expected data growth during the migration window
Network planning
- 1GbE versus 10GbE or faster transfer requirements
- Available switch ports, VLANs and transceivers
- Estimated transfer window and acceptable downtime
- Whether migration traffic must be isolated from production traffic
Operational planning
- Delivery date before the migration starts
- Time for installation, burn-in and validation
- Fallback or rollback period
- Rental extension option if the project overruns
- Collection date after successful handover
